Meet the people | From robot programmer to Experience Center coordinator: a career full of growth

Sometimes, a career starts with a clear ambition; sometimes, it develops organically. For Jan, it all started with a passion for robots and automation. His journey at AWL began 21 years ago and led him from robot programmer to trainer in robotics and coordinator of the AWL Experience Center.

From studies to a career in robotics

Jan pursued a part-time study in Mechanical Engineering at the High School of Technology. During his studies, he discovered his fascination with robots and automation. Looking for a job in which he could follow this passion, he applied at AWL. There, he found exactly what he was looking for: an environment where he could work with robots as well as develop further. “I wanted a job in automation because I think it’s amazing,” says Jan.

A career full of development

21 years ago, at the beginning of his career at AWL, Jan discovered that there was no real training for robot programmers. This prompted Jan to set up a basic robotics course for AWL. Whereas back then, robot programming was often learned on one's own initiative, this course provided a solid foundation for future programmers.

Over the years, the need for training also grew. This led to the AWL training program “Robot Programmer in 100 Days,” which trains new AWL employees to become robot programmers these days. This program, set up with colleagues Sjors Kamstra and Chris Testerink, has now become a permanent part of AWL, with which 10 to 20 people are trained each year. “We have established a powerful tool with this. People learn independently and can quickly contribute to projects,” says Jan. The Experience Center plays a central role in this: a practical environment where trainees can work directly with robots and machines.

With the rising demand for robot training, robot safety has become increasingly important. AWL also recognizes the importance of robot safety. The Robot Safety training has already seen great success. Within 3 years, more than 200 people passed the training. Soon the Robot Safety training will be available at oZone*. Until then, still it is provided internally.

*oZone is a digital learning platform developed for and by technical companies.

The step to the Experience Center

Jan's expertise and drive to transfer knowledge led him to a new challenge: coordinating the Experience Center. Here, he combines his passion for training with facilitating R&D projects and validating for customers. The Experience Center is an advanced learning environment for technology and innovation, where robots and machines are used for training, process development and customer issues.

His work is multifaceted, from training new employees to ensuring the Experience Center remains presentable for visitors. “When customers come in, I want them to think 'wow.' Because what happens here is really 'wow,' and you should feel that when you step inside.”

Keep learning and developing

For Jan, learning never stops. He makes sure he stays up-to-date with the latest technologies by staying active in projects himself. This keeps him on his toes as a trainer. Jan has also contributed to the development of robot training programs for various schools, such as Windesheim University of Applied Sciences and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. His contribution has ensured that students at these institutions have access to high-quality robot training, preparing them for careers in the fast-growing field of robotics and automation.

A tip for the new generation of engineers

For those considering a career in engineering, Jan has a clear message: a career in engineering is versatile and challenging. “Hard skills such as specific technical knowledge are important, but soft skills such as communication and problem-solving ability are at least as important. That's why soft skills are also part of the 100-day program.”

His most important career tip? “If you always do what you did, you will always get what you got. Don't be afraid to take steps forward.” This motto has gotten him where he is today and is an inspiration to anyone who wants to continue to develop themselves.

AWL in one sentence?

“AWL is a fantastic company with great colleagues who build technically advanced machines with the latest technical developments.”
