New in oZone: Robot Safety Training – Free, practical, and essential for anyone working with robots

Working with industrial robots offers speed, efficiency, and smart automation, but it also requires awareness and knowledge of safety. Especially now that robots are playing an increasing role in workplaces, that knowledge is more important than ever.

At AWL, we see safety as the foundation for every successful collaboration between humans and robots. That’s why we’re happy to share our expertise to contribute to safer workplaces across the industry.

The new, free learning module, Robot Safety, helps operators, technicians, and trainers better recognize risks, understand safety systems, and work more safely in automated environments. It’s practical, accessible, and developed based on years of experience in high-tech production environments.

Safe working with robots starts with knowledge, and we're happy to share it.
At AWL, we believe that safety is the foundation of every working environment, especially in industrial and automated settings where humans and robots collaborate daily in complex production processes. Because we work with this advanced technology ourselves, we actively invest in the knowledge of our (new) employees and in the future technicians of tomorrow.

That’s why, in collaboration with TIEN Innovatie, we’ve converted an internal training that we've used for years into an accessible digital learning module: Robot Safety (also known as Robot Veiligheid). From now on, this module is available completely free of charge to anyone with access to the national oZone learning platform.

From Practical Experience to Applicable Training
Working safely with robots is not self-evident. Industrial robots offer benefits like speed, efficiency, and precision, but also bring certain risks. What if a robot suddenly moves? What safety systems are in place? And how can you recognize a hazardous situation in time?

Until now, many companies and educators lacked a practical, accessible training on this subject. That’s why this training was developed: to raise awareness of dangers, common mistakes, and ways to reduce risks.

The Robot Safety training covers:

  • The risks associated with industrial robots and robot cells
  • How to identify hazardous situations
  • How to work safely in an automated environment

... and therefore provides a directly applicable foundation for safer work with industrial robots.
This oZone module is suitable for anyone who works with robots (regularly or occasionally) - from operators to maintenance technicians.

Available in oZone
The training was developed by, among others, Jan de Vries, employed at AWL, in collaboration with TIEN Innovatie. It has been used for years within AWL, as well as by our partners at Perron038. By now making the training available as a module in Dutch, English, and Spanish through oZone, we are offering this valuable knowledge to other educational institutions and companies in the Netherlands (with an oZone account), completely free of charge.

With this, we aim to contribute to a shared sense of responsibility for safety in the industry and help companies and educators to better prepare their people for working safely in a modern, automated environment. After all, knowledge only becomes truly valuable when it’s shared.

The Robot Safety training doesn’t stand alone. For the past four years, the NEN3140 VOP training developed by AWL has also been available through oZone - a learning path focused on electrical safety. Both trainings underline our belief: safety starts with awareness, and awareness begins with knowledge. By digitizing and widely sharing that knowledge, we are structurally investing in safer workplaces - both within and outside AWL.
