AWL interns nominated for FEDA Young Professional Award 2019

The jury of the Drive and Automation Technology Federation (FEDA) has selected the nominees for the Young Professional Award 2019. One of these nominees is a group of three students who have carried out an assignment for AWL. The nominated AWL team consists of interns from Hogeschool Windesheim and they will present themselves during the Dutch Fluid Power Transmission Conference on October 10, 2019. The winner will be announced the same day.

The Nut-Welding add-on team
Team members Jasper Groen, Frans van Dam and Antal van Ravensteijn did their internship and developed the Nut-Welding add-on at AWL in Harderwijk in the period from April to June this year.

This add-on module can be connected to AWL's M-Line machine, in the place where a part rack is normally connected. When using this module, while filling and emptying the jig, the operator works next to a cobot (collaborative robot). The cobot picks up loose aluminum parts and holds them in a jig under a projection welding machine. Here, the part is provided with a bolt, which is widely used in the automotive industry for the attachment of ground cables.

The challenge of this project was the integration of the cobot throughout the work process. The aim is also to show customers what is possible with cobots within this welding machine. That goal has been achieved; many AWL customers have seen this application and responded enthusiastically. A cobot that can perform simple tasks in a space it shares with an employee, gives them added value for many different applications.

Young Professional Award
The Young Professional Award is the FEDA prize whereby student teams of HBO (High level vocational) Mechatronics and Industrial Automation compete nationally with their project or assignment for the Young Professional title. In addition to the project content and a working end product, an evaluation is also made of the communication, the degree of interdisciplinarity, the inventiveness of the solution and the extent to which the entire project and the project team is managed during the assignment. It is the fourth edition of the contest.
